New York insider tips: My 20 visits and the best spots in the city

For me, it is more than just a metropolis; it is almost a second home. I've been here almost 20 times in the last few years, both for business and pleasure. Each time, I discover new corners that fascinate me and at the same time, I always return to my absolute favorite spots. Whether it's your first time in the city or you already know New York well, you might find some inspiration for your next visit here.

And before you ask: Yes, at first glance this may not seem to have anything to do with branding, but it's precisely personal experiences like this that make me and BoredBrand's studio special. We love to draw creative energy from places like New York. Since I'm regularly asked about my favorite spots in the city, I thought it was time to share them with everyone. So, let's go - get inspired!

Status: October 2024. This list will grow, I promise. :-)

You can find even more tips here!

I have revealed some of my favorite spots in the article, but in my Google list there are many more tips to discover. From hidden cafés to special restaurants and places you shouldn't miss.

New York Experiences

Company XIV - Cocktail Magique

‍Afascinating experience in the middle of Brooklyn: Cocktail Magique combines the magic of a variety show with seductive burlesque. The intimate location and opulent atmosphere make it THE hidden highlight of New York for me. Between spectacular burlesque performances, super fun performances and irresistible cocktails, every evening is unforgettable. A real New York secret that is worth every visit!

Summit One Vanderbilt

‍Ofall the viewing platforms in New York Summit One is my absolute favorite. The view is breathtaking, and thanks to the glass and mirror elements, it creates an artistic effect that makes it perfect for photos. I particularly like the bar on the third floor, where you can enjoy the view in peace and quiet with a drink - a real highlight. Pro tip: Don't book before 12:30 pm, as New York is often still covered in fog and the view can be cloudy.

Summit One Moments

Madison Square Garden

‍Asa field hockey fan, a visit to a New York Rangers game at Madison Square Garden is an absolute must for me. But the building itself is one of New York's iconic landmarks and offers much more than just sport: concerts, events and everything that's anyone's cup of tea. My tip: check the event calendar, maybe there's something that interests you. But be quick - the Garden is likely to be demolished or relocated in the next five years to make way for the expansion of Penn Station

Staten Island Ferry

The free Staten Island Ferry offers great views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. If you want to see more, you can book longer boat tours that also pass under the Brooklyn Bridge - but these cost extra.

Take some nuts with you and head to Central Park

A walk through Central Park is always a good idea, and if you have a few nuts with you, you can not only snack yourself, but also make the squirrels happy. Important: only take nuts with you that they can actually eat - unsalted walnuts, for example. The little furry friends will thank you and if you are brave, most of them will even eat them out of your hand. :-)

Corners that I love

Williamsburg

Williamsburg is the perfect place for anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of Manhattan but still retain that New York feeling. Here you can finally find really good coffee - especially at Lions Milkwhose owner is a good friend of mine. Feel free to say hello when you're there! In addition to great cafés, Williamsburg also offers fantastic restaurants, cool brunch spots and small, unique stores that are perfect for browsing. The vibe is more relaxed and less touristy, but still full of the creative energy that makes this part of Brooklyn so special.

New York on Film - Take a disposable camera with you. Definitely a vibe!

Doyers Street - Chinatown's hidden gem

‍Doyers Street is a small but historic street in the heart of Chinatown. With its iconic bend and colorful facades, it immediately stands out and tells stories of times gone by when it was known as the Bloody Angle. Today, it's a peaceful hotspot for great dim sum restaurants and traditional Chinese apothecaries. Here you can find authentic food away from the tourist crowds, and the street is definitely worth a stroll if you want to experience the real Chinatown.

SoHo & NoHo - stroll, store and enjoy NYC

If you want to stroll away from the hustle and bustle of Broadway with all the big flagship stores, SoHo and NoHo are the perfect neighborhoods. Here you will find charming little boutiques, galleries and cafés in the side streets that are far away from the tourist hustle and bustle. The famous cobbled streets and historic buildings give SoHo and NoHo their unique vibe.

Food & Drinks in New York: My favorite spots

Daintree - Roof Top Bar

‍Location: Midtown, Manhattan
‍If
you're looking for a rooftop bar with a relaxed vibe and breathtaking views, then Daintree is the place for you. With a view of the Empire State Building and a cool cocktail menu, this bar offers the perfect mix of style and casualness - away from the crowded tourist bars. A real highlight for a relaxed drink above the rooftops of New York!

Classic American BBQ - Fat pig

‍Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
‍Fette
Sau
is the ultimate spot for all BBQ lovers. This "garage" location delivers authentic American BBQ in a relaxed atmosphere. The smoky, spicy flavor makes it one of my favorites.

Mable's Smokehouse

‍Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
‍You
'll find evenmore BBQ love at Mable's Smokehouse. This spot brings Texas-style BBQ straight to New York, with a cozy atmosphere and a menu full of succulent classics.

Billy's Hot Dog Cart

Location: Central Park West
‍Not
only one of the cheapest hot dogs in New York, but also incredibly tasty and warmly served. For just 2 dollars you can get a classic hot dog, and for 2.50 dollars I recommend the hot dog with the spicy sausage - be sure to get it with everything on it! Add a drink for 1 dollar and you have an unbeatable, authentic New York street food experience. 4.9 on Google and 5* on Tripadivsor - and rightly so. GO FOR IT!

Snack tacos - LOS TACOS No.1

‍Location: SoHo & Madison Square Garden
‍For
the best snack tacos in the city, I recommend LOS TACOS No.1. Whether you're out and about in SoHo or need a bite after a Rangers game at Madison Square Garden, these tacos are always a hit.

Chinatown - Pineapple Bun

‍Location: Chinatown, Manhattan
‍You
should definitely try a Pineapple Bun in Chinatown at Mei Lai Wah. Yes, there are often queues, but the delicious snack on the go is absolutely worth it.

Taiyaki NYC

‍Location: Chinatown, Manhattan
‍A
sweet end to your Chinatown excursion? A fish-shaped ice cream cone and soft serve ice cream with unicorn horns from Taiyaki NYC. Instagram-worthy and delicious at the same time!

Shake Shack

‍Location: Multiple locations
‍Shake
Shack may be a chain, but for me, no one makes better burgers. The classic Shack Burger and the 50/50 Lemonade are my favorites. Perfect for a quick and delicious meal no matter where you are in the city.

Double tip for the coffee search

‍Ifyou're looking for good coffee, pay attention to the pictures! Anyone who sprinkles chocolate powder on the cappuccino has lost in my eyes. A sure sign of good coffee is when you can see latte art - this shows that the barista has their machine under control and the coffee is well adjusted. 👌 Applies in every city.

Top food areas off the beaten track in Manhattan

Hell's Kitchen‍

This neighborhood west of Times Square has become a hotspot for foodies, without the tourist overcrowding. Here you'll find everything from authentic Thai food to cozy little bistros and Latin American street food spots. Hell's Kitchen is known for its variety and relaxed atmosphere, which is very popular with locals.

East Village‍

The East Village is perfect for anyone who appreciates a varied culinary offering. There are many small, independent restaurants here, ranging from Japanese ramen to New York pizzerias. Especially in the evening, the neighborhood is a popular meeting place for those who want to enjoy great food in a relaxed atmosphere.

Lower East Side‍

The Lower East Side is also a real insider tip for anyone who loves good food. From stylish tapas bars to traditional delis - the history and diversity of the city is reflected here. We particularly recommend the small, unassuming eateries, which often offer incredible value for money.

General food tip

‍Don't know where to eat? Don't stress! Just pull up TripAdvisor or Google and search for a spot nearby or in the area you want to go. I've never really gone wrong with restaurants with ratings above 4.4 stars. Just look at the photos, get a first impression and then: off you go!

Thank you!

New York has so many hidden gems, and I hope my tips will help you explore the city in a cool, relaxed way. Whether you're looking for the best food spots or casual vibes in Williamsburg - there's always something new to discover!
